Rinko Kawauchi

Exhibition: “A Glimmer of Silence”

The use of natural light in this image creates a focus point to where the viewer should look, it holds a movment to which the viewer sees the beauty of the subject matter. The dimmed colour nicely forms a relationship with the impact of light on the flower. The light is almost giving the flower a sense of different ‘life’ . the image has been cropped showing a diffrence in scale between the background and foreground subject matters. By having the background out of focus and the subject matter in focus the viewer is drawn to the subject. Kawauchi’s work afe often delicate with suttle white light. Her use of angles and formating of photographs influenced my work.

Taryn Simon

Exhibition: An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamilia

Simons use of colour and light highlights the abtraction in this image. The density of the dark against the light creates an image that lets the viewer focus on the subject matter of the photograph. Simon often takes photgraphs of issues she is passionate about and photographs them in unique ways. This photograph questions the viewer of its subject, maybe creating a relationship between how you view the image to how it it has been taken. Simons photographs interest me because of her style in which she photographs. She makes global issues have different meanings or emphasises them in the way she photographs, grabbing the viewers attention. Her use of Abstraction and lighting influenced my photography work.

Antoni Gaudi

Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, 1882 – unfinished.

This design is very large in scale and is very detailed. This building looks as though it has a sense of symbolism to its design as it was built  for a cathedral. The detailing in this disign is amazing, it looks very delicate and harmonious in the way it has been placed together. The form and shape of this design creates a gothic mood to the building. The building has a sense of mystery, with its large scale Gaudi creates a facinating building that is an artwork meters from the ground. Gaudi’s work was a major influence in my interior module, his unique designs and skeletal structures helped me in creating my work.

Gallery:Abstraction

Sophie Connolly -

“…the subject of the photo is distorted or unrecognizable.”

This is relevent to my work because most of work that i do is abstract. I have an interest in absraction because it is faciniating to explore and create somthing that is questionable. Researching and explorings things that are abstract has a great impact on my work as it encourages me to to create something that is facinating to the viewer and lets them decide on what the subject matter is or what it could be.

Dictionary:Light

Light:

  • Something that makes things visible or affords illumination: All colors depend on light.
  • The sensation produced by stimulation of the organs of sight.
  • The radiance or illumination from a particular source: the light of a candle.
  • The illumination from the sun; daylight: We awoke at the first light.
  • Daybreak or dawn: when light appeared in the east.
  • Daytime: Summer has more hours of light.
  • A particular light or illumination in which an object seen takes on a certain appearance: viewing the portrait in dim light.
  • A device for or means of igniting, as a spark, flame, or match: Could you give me a light?
  • A traffic light: Don’t cross till the light changes.
  • The effect of light falling on an object or scene as represented in a picture.
  • One of the brightest parts of a picture.
This is relevent to my work because I explored light during my photography module. I researched light through taking photographs myself. photographing during the day and at night, using different objects and materials. I explored light in streets, candle light, sunlight, reflection, and light through and on different materials. These definitions summerize my exploration of light.

Photography

This photograph was also taken while exploring light. It was created at night by using candles and candle wax. The light from the candles created a golden tone to the photograph highlighting the shape and form of the wax piece. The close up angle creates focus in the image and draws the viewer to the sense of movment the shape creates, like a piece of landscape.

Photography

This photograph was taken while i was exploring light. I chose this photograph because I like how it dosnt look like a photograph but more like a graphic image. I took this at night when the light was coming through underneath a door. I like the way the contrast of light frames the carpet creating a three dimentional image. The light on the carpet shows clear texture and gives a sense of space to the image. This image questions what is in the photograph when it is first seen.

Interior Model

I chose this work because Ilike the design that Icreated and how it came about. The design came from exploring the skeletal framing of people and animals. I traced bone structures and combined them together to create several images with simple lines and shapes, adding colour and layers to show contrast. My final model was developed from the idea of  having a sculpture that represents a pile of fallen vertebres held together by a segment of the rib cage.
